Irish Freemasons Young Musician of the Year 2024

01/11/2024

The Grand Lodge of Ireland was proud to host the Irish Freemasons Young Musician of the Year 2024 at Freemasons' Hall, Molesworth Street, Dublin. This prestigious national competition, established to support emerging talent in classical music, is now firmly regarded as Ireland's premier young musician award.

Following a series of outstanding semi-finals, four finalists were selected to perform in the grand final on 12 October. The international jury awarded first prize to pianist Defne Gultoprak of the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Her compelling programme included Scarlatti's Sonata in D minor K141, Ravel's "Ondine" from Gaspard de la Nuit, and Chopin's Ballade No. 4, performed with remarkable artistry and maturity.

The second prize was awarded to violinist Cillian Ó Cathasaigh (Cork School of Music), third to pianist Ella Nagy, and fourth to tubist Adam Buttimer. Special memorial prizes also recognised excellence in strings, wind and brass, and viola. In addition to a generous bursary and prize fund, Defne will receive a solo recital engagement at the National Concert Hall in 2025, furthering her opportunities on the national and international stage.

The competition continues to demonstrate the Freemasons' commitment to supporting Ireland's young artists and investing in the cultural life of the nation. Over three centuries, Irish Freemasonry has encouraged learning, discipline, and fellowship, values reflected in this award's mission to nurture talent and celebrate excellence. The 2024 final was a fitting tribute to the future of Irish music and a reminder of the enduring partnership between Freemasonry and the arts.
